Question: What compels customers to choose one brand over another?

As a growth-focused business owner, you might often find yourself questioning how to truly stand out in a crowded market while delivering a great product or service. While standing out is important, the real question is— how do you attract your best-fit customer?

Ever wonder

  • How do you inspire customers to choose you—again and again?
  • Why do some brands resonate better than others, attracting deeper desire and lasting demand?

Realizing the Nature of Connection

First, let’s start with something familiar.

The Good Girl… Daredevil… Wise Guy.

Three personalities we instantly recognize. Take a second and ask what comes to mind: What do they wear, how do they talk, what matters most to them? Which one feels closest to you, and why?

These instant associations aren’t random—they’re shaped by the teachers of storytelling, relationships and society. And whether we realize it or not, our decisions often respond to : Personality—those we admire, relate to, or instinctively avoid.

As the filter of feeling, personality translates our characteristics, beliefs, interests, and points of view. It’s what makes people, places, and things feel human—but it’s often missing in business.

So as a DTC or direct-to-consumer brand, how do you attract customers beyond logic? Why is personality a better approach—and how does inspire loyal customer relationships?

The Impersonal Alternative.
Traditional Customer Attraction:

Transactional + Referral

Too often, businesses default to logic-heavy tactics: highlighting product specs, competitive pricing, quality guarantees, and so on. Though these rational selling points are important to know—they only scratch the surface of what truly drives connection.

O1 Transactional Branding

Transactional branding focuses on short-term persuasion—tactics like discounts, feature comparisons, or urgent call-to-actions (CTAs). Though transactional approaches create awareness, they fail to sustain attention and generate lasting demand. They may close a sale, but rarely do they retain a meaningful relationship. Therefore—momentum feels fleeting, traction unpredictable, and as a generic strategy, differentiation weak at best. The result is a customer base in constant flux—responsive to primarily price.

Remaining transactionally focused invites:

Price Dependance

Higher Customer Churn

The “Replaceable” Perception

O2 Referrals

Referrals are passive leads generated through word-of-mouth—trusted, but largely out of your control. They bring customers, but not always the right volume, at the right time, or the right fit for your business. Solely relying on others’ advocacy instead of your own intentional strategy makes cashflow unpredictable. And when your goal is stable, scalable expansion, it’s a fragile foundation to build on.

Remaining referral-only focused invites:

Fluctuating Cashflow

Product-Customer Mismatch

Dead Stock, Unsold Solutions

Unpredictable Sales Growth

Chasing growth is harder without the right customer and the loyal relationship.  That’s why the brands that outperform don’t rely on logic or referrals alone. They build on something stickier. If personality is that guiding glue, what is it that makes it stick?

The Science that Drives Sense.
How People Choose

So how does personality influence decision making and sales? Though as human beings, we like to “think things through,” our decision-making is not all logically based. When it comes to both products and services, the real driver behind our decisions is: Emotion.

Harvard professor Gerald Zaltman found that 95% of purchasing decisions happen subconsciously, driven by feelings, instincts, and personal identity. In other words, the subconscious plays a powerful role in influencing our minds and our wallets.

We feel first. We justify later. (Does this sound like you?)

A second study published in Psychology & Marketing supports this, showing that consumers who feel emotionally connected to a brand have a 306% higher lifetime value. They are also 71% more likely to recommend the brand to others.

Emotion is the X-factor in memorability, magnetism, and long-term engagement with the personality we enjoy. And the key to that emotion? Human connection.

So to sum this up— People aren’t only buying based on need, but how something makes them feel. The brands with strong emotional clarity are the ones customers can personally identify with— as a reflection of who they are or who’d they like to become. And when emotional conviction reveals commonality, it sparks the magic of human connection. Below are some brand examples. Which one(s) resonate with you or the best version of yourself?

Nike® inspires excellence.

Apple® fuels creativity.

Coca-Cola® evokes happiness.

These persona-driven connections aren’t accidental; in many cases, brand builders strategically craft them using Brand Archetypes—a powerful method for shaping a brand’s personality in building a strong emotional connection with customers.

Attracting the Likeminded.
Brand Archetypes

Now we’re going to talk about the signature symbols that bring personality to life. Just as we naturally recognize symbols or familiar character types in stories, we instinctively connect with brands that reflect our own beliefs, values, and aspirations.

Transcending time, language, and culture, Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, proposed the concept of familiarity through 12 Brand Archetypes that foster the innate characters and behaviors of people.

To explain these innate characters using the example of storytelling, let me ask you this:  If you were to give (5) people the same story to tell, would they tell the same story and in the exact same way? Imagine the variety of expression… Archetypes are what we use to categorize this range of character and behavior we innately have.

In brand building, archetypes are transformational, persona-building tools that, like symbols, expedite the understanding and alignment with a brand and business idea. Each archetype appeals to an audience with shared common interests desires.

For example:

As you know, everyone’s core desires are different, which is why some brands attract us more than others. I.e. Personality magnetizes your image, filtering and pulling the customers naturally attracted to you. Amplified attraction means greater trust, purchase confidence and the brand loyalty for long-term success.

Archetypes Drive Business.
The Conversion of Commonality

It’s all about speaking the language of your customers and meeting them where they are. The more you share that’s in common, the more they can align. Incorporating the right archetype can strengthen this facet of your brand and the performance of your business, providing:

  • Emotional differentiation
  • Improved retention and trust
  • More intuitive messaging
  • Premium perception & pricing power
  • Clearer team alignment
  • Decision-making consistency

The Takeaway:

Brands that spark emotion spark action.
Don’t just compete on features, compete on feeling.

And archetypes provide a proven way to transform your identity into a magnetic message your ideal buyer can enjoy, remember and return to.

But they’re only one part of the puzzle.

To scale with clarity and intention, your brand must connect across every layer—positioning, messaging, values, and experience. When all are aligned, you don’t just inspire sales. You inspire community.
